Steven K. Brumer is a Certified Family Law Specialist with more than 30 years of experience, focusing his practice on family law and the intersection of family law with trusts, estates, and other areas of law. His diverse legal background allows him to bring a comprehensive perspective to family law matters, with extensive experience handling domestic violence restraining orders, child custody and visitation, child and spousal support, property and debt division, and post-judgment disputes.

A native of New York City, Steven earned his undergraduate degree from Brooklyn College and his law degree from the University of Miami. He began his legal career in 1999 as a civil litigator in Miami, Florida. In 2001, he relocated to San Diego to earn his Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Taxation from the University of San Diego. After being admitted to the California Bar, he began practicing with an estate planning and probate firm, building a strong foundation in trusts, estates, and taxation.
Steven’s career has included private practice, in-house counsel work, and business ownership before returning to private practice and focusing on family law. His experience spans family law, trusts and estates, taxation, real estate, civil litigation, conservatorships and guardianships, bankruptcy, and alternative dispute resolution. His litigation experience includes domestic violence restraining orders, child custody and visitation, child and spousal support, property and debt division, and post-judgment disputes.
Steven’s breadth of experience allows him to approach family law matters from multiple perspectives, particularly when cases involve interconnected financial, tax, business, and estate issues. His meticulous attention to detail and diverse legal background enable him to identify issues others may overlook, understand each client’s unique circumstances and goals, and provide thoughtful, comprehensive guidance tailored to their needs throughout their cases.
Steven's approach to representing clients is to listen first and determine where the client wants to go. He then maps a course to that destination using the facts and the law available to him. Representative matters include:
- Obtained an award of significant monetary sanctions against an opposing party in a family law divorce trial.
- Obtained one of many domestic violence restraining orders protecting a client from an abusive and harassing intimate partner.
- Successfully defended a high-profile client in a conservatorship proceeding initiated by the client’s parent, who was also a prominent public figure.
- Successfully settled a petition in probate court challenging the validity of a trust amendment procured by duress and undue influence

Outside of practice, Steven is an endurance road cyclist, mountain biker, and motorcyclist. When he is not watching his son play weekend sports, he can often be found enjoying San Diego’s roads and trails. When off the bikes, Steven enjoys spending time with his wife, a pediatric nurse, their children, and their two rescued dogs: a Labrador/Coonhound mix and a Terrier mix.
